The Skyranger and Skynex AA Systems air defense systems are already in Ukraine, says Rheinmetall CEO in a conversation with Gabor Steingart, a columnist for the German edition of Focus.
The Rheinmetall Group announced on December 9, 2022, that it would supply an unnamed “international customer” with two new 35-mm Skynex ground-based anti-aircraft artillery systems.
Ukraine has become the first known recipient of the Skynex anti-aircraft artillery system, which is a further development of the ZAK Skyranger 35 (Skyshield) family based on an artillery module with a 35-mm Oerlikon Revolver Gun automatic revolver gun.
The Oerlikon cannon fires AHEAD programmable projectiles, making it especially effective against small airborne targets.
It is stated that one to three 35-mm programmable projectiles are enough to effectively destroy one small UAV, while the cost of one such projectile is now about 4,000 euros. The effective firing range is up to 4.5 km.
