International Connection
Rail Baltica is an ambitious 870-kilometer railway project connecting Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania with the broader railway networks of Eastern and Western Europe. The new route will be built to standard European track gauge, differing from the wider gauges typically used in the Baltic states, facilitating faster train travel to Poland and beyond.
Speed and Electrification
Trains on the new railway will reach speeds of up to 249 km/h, with the entire line being electrified to promote sustainable transportation. This high-speed rail line will not only enhance international connectivity but also streamline local transit within the Estonian capital.
Ülemiste Station Design
The Ülemiste station is set to feature dynamic, streamlined forms characteristic of Zaha Hadid’s architectural style. The design resembles a massive pedestrian bridge linking two parts of the city divided by railway tracks. The construction will utilize modular technology, with individual sections prefabricated offsite and assembled on location.
Project Timeline
The concept for the station was established in 2019 after winning an international architectural competition. Construction is scheduled to be completed by 2028.
