Lviv International Airport could resume operations as early as April or May this year, with the possibility of a full reopening by the summer of 2025. This news was shared by the airport’s General Director, Tetiana Romanovska, in an interview with the Ukrainian publication Vysokiy Zamok.
Airlines Ready to Resume Flights
Romanovska confirmed that within a month of the terminal’s opening, five to seven airlines are prepared to restart operations in Lviv. Among these airlines are:
- Wizz Air
- Air Baltic
- Turkish Airlines
- Sky Up
- Austrian Airlines
- Lufthansa
- LOT Polish Airlines
In particular, Sky Up may be the first to resume charter flights to European cities.
Audits and Safety Assessments
Romanovska also highlighted that representatives from Sky Up have already conducted an audit of the airport in 2025, while Wizz Air performed their own inspection last year. Airlines are currently conducting preliminary analyses, and once the decision to open the airspace is made, operations could begin within 3-4 days.
Opportunities for Travel Agencies
Ukrainian tour operators are currently selling summer trips from airports in Poland and the EU. However, if Lviv Airport reopens, they will quickly adjust, as this would offer a more convenient and cost-effective option for Ukrainian travelers.
“We would like the airport to resume operations in the summer, when aviation traffic is traditionally high. But if it happens in April or May, it will be great news for everyone,” Romanovska concluded.
Reaction from European Low-Cost Carriers
Air Baltic has confirmed its readiness to resume flights to Ukraine once it is safe to do so. Wizz Air stated that it could return to flying within six weeks after a ceasefire is declared. Ryanair is also preparing a plan to resume flights within 4-6 weeks after the war ends.
Collaboration with Eurocontrol
Ukraine and Eurocontrol have agreed to extend the European Voluntary Air Navigation Solidarity Fund for 2025-2026, which will support Ukraine’s aviation industry during this transitional period.
This promising development offers hope for the revival of Lviv’s international air connectivity, which will not only benefit Ukrainian citizens but also bolster tourism and business travel.
