A bicycle lane will be constructed from Lviv to Zhovkva, and negotiations are underway to extend it to Rava-Ruska.
The construction of the bicycle lane is part of the reconstruction of the international highway M-09, as reported by the Department of Urban Agglomeration of the Lviv City Council.
The construction of the bicycle lane on the M-09 highway is unprecedented in Ukraine. The project includes numerous innovative elements that have not been used before. It also serves as a good example of inter-municipal cooperation and consolidated positions of local communities.
Negotiations and official appeals to the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine have already begun in order to extend the bicycle lane not only from Lviv to Zhovkva but also to Rava-Ruska, which is located near the border. This will connect Lviv to the EuroVelo network developed by the European Cyclists’ Federation, connecting European countries. Considering the significant number of architectural and cultural landmarks in Zhovkva, the bicycle lane will greatly expand the tourism potential of the entire Lviv region.
Furthermore, a quality cycling infrastructure contributes to community development. It provides an additional alternative route, as 20% of the population from the surrounding communities around Lviv are ready to regularly commute to the city by bicycle.
