A Russian missile attack on the city of Sumy has caused widespread destruction, killing 34 people and injuring 117 others, according to local authorities. Among the damaged sites is a historic architectural monument, the Sukhanov-Sumovsky Estate, located on Petropavlivska Street.
Once home to the Institute of Applied Physics of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, the estate now lies severely damaged. The blast shattered windows and doors, destroyed the surrounding fence, and left the main entrance blocked by rubble.
Also affected was the Congress Center of Sumy State University, where a children’s performance was scheduled to take place in the coming days. The building sustained significant damage, casting uncertainty over future university events.
The missile strike caused damage to at least 55 buildings, including an educational institution, non-residential premises, apartment complexes, private homes, and multiple passenger vehicles.
Emergency crews continue search-and-rescue efforts amid the devastation. Ukrainian officials have condemned the attack as yet another deliberate assault on civilian infrastructure and cultural heritage.
International organizations and humanitarian agencies are being urged to respond swiftly to support the victims and assist in the recovery of the city’s historical and educational landmarks.
