Switzerland will install solar panels between railway tracks, according to Fast Company. The first test section will be mounted in the western part of the country in the summer of 2023.
The technology was developed by the startup Sun-Ways. As the publication states, co-founder Joseph Scuderi decided to equip the tracks with solar panels because “a large amount of unused space goes to waste.” The solar panels will generate electricity for local households and potentially for trains running above the panels in the future.
The pilot project is estimated to cost $560,000. To achieve this, they plan to install 60 panels on a 43-meter section. The solar panels will be deployed on the tracks like a carpet during the night when there is less train traffic, according to the company. Five thousand kilometers of tracks with solar panels could potentially power around 750,000 households.
