Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine’s national railway company, has announced plans to significantly expand its fleet of high-speed trains. The company intends to purchase 20 additional trains from South Korean manufacturers. This decision comes as a result of domestic producers being unable to meet the demand within the required timeframe due to limited resources and funding.
The new fleet is expected to transport approximately 6 million passengers annually. The first trains could be delivered within 18 to 24 months after the signing of the agreement. It is anticipated that all 20 high-speed trains will be operational in Ukraine within the next three to four years.
Ukraine has a history of successful cooperation with South Korean train manufacturers. In 2012, the country acquired 10 Intercity electric trains from Hyundai Corporation in preparation for the UEFA Euro 2012 football championship.
